I want to quit swimming?

Before you say "Don’t quit, it get’s easier", hear me out.
I wanted to try something new and a sport, because I’m in high school, so I joined the team, but now, it interferes with EVERYTHING. I can’t hang out with my friends, go shopping, or even do schoolwork (when I’m in an honor’s class and it is madd hard), and I have to get up at 7:45 am on saturday, and we stay until 3 pm, and I’m sad because I wanted to do drama since 5th grade, and tryouts are next thursday at 2, but since I have swimming I can’t do it. I skipped today because I didn’t want to go, and don’t call me lame, but I cried yesterday because my coach is a bitch, and she yelled at me so much, and my muscles hurt, and I’m the only person who’s never done it before, so I am the slowest, and I’ve been there for a month, and my times for a 100 FREE are 3-4 minutes, while the other lanes finish in :30-1:30. I HATE it so much, I just want to do something else, but I can’t just quit, I want to finish the season, but I just hate the sport, and I spraint my ankle doing it, and my coach acts like I’m lying, but I’m not. :(
And my Head Coach (he’s nice, the assistant one is the mean one), is my Honors Bio teacher for the whole year, and I’d feel too guilty if I left, but I still want to leave.

So I made a final list of pros and cons

Pros:
Get to see friends
Have something to do after school

Cons:
Coach is mean
Too tired to to school work
Can’t keep up with school work
Go to school from 7:25-5:45
Spraint my ankle
Only varsity level is available
Have to run a mile every day, and I get pretty good times, but the seniors push me and stuff
Have to carry two bags a day, one for school and one for swimming.
My goggles and cap got stolen, so I cant do anything right now anyways
I have gym EVERYDAY for an HOUR, so I have to do that along with swimming EVERYDAY.

Our first meet is on the 11th, so I have to quit before then.
I don’t know what to do though, like my mom says, I can’t make up my mind, even though the cons outweigh the pros.
@ Francis – That is what I’m worried about, that if I quit, I will fail myself and my team.
No one told me what to do about my coach being my teacher.

The cons definitely do outweigh the pros. It seems like this is interfering with your academics (which should ALWAYS come first). This also seems like it is going to take a toll on your physical health (sprained ankle already) and mentally (I know I’d start to go a bit crazy from all that). Also not being able to see your friends or even have some down time is going to be bad.

Quit the team. Swimming is a wonderful sport, but it takes time and dedication, just like anything else. If it’s not for you, then that’s OK. Don’t feel bad about it. Go on and do what ever it is that you love.

Your teacher isn’t going to hold it against you if you quit. I’d hope that he is adult enough to realize that swimming isn’t for everyone. You gave it a try, and it wasn’t your thing. If you feel guilty, just explain to him that you wanted to try it, but it’s interferring too much with your school work and you don’t want your grades to suffer. He’s surely got to appreciate that as a teacher.

You seem to have thought about this a lot and from the list of pros and cons you have it looks like it could help you to quit. Quiting doesn’t mean you fail if that’s what you are worried about.

I’d actually suggest you quit especially if it’s interfering with school work. Education is very important.

I’m not surprised that it interferes with your school work but you should have at least thought about it or did some research ahead before you jumped the gun and joined without knowing anything. Think, it would have helped to ask when meetings are taken place. You really shouldn’t join clubs like that if you have honors. Even I know that and I’m a freshman.

Quitting the team isn’t failing yourself. Education is important and if swimming is interfering with that then you probably should quit. And this seems kinda funny to me but did you actually believe swimming would be easy for a newbie like you? Yes, you’re sore. So what? You sprained your ankle. Big deal. Sports don’t come without injuries every once and awhile, especially if you’re new.

If you’re tired then lay on your bed and rest a little, take a shower, it’ll help relax you. But don’t think that just cause you’re tired doesn’t mean you can get out of doing school work. When you become an adult, it’ll be much harder for you. And if you have to carry two bags, why not leave the swimming bag with your last period teacher in the morning after practice and get it after school is over? That should help. If you’re goggles and cap got stolen, tell the coaches about it. Your coach isn’t the only mean one, I remember my coach in gym was a total ***** and it wasn’t JUST her. If the seniors push you when you’re running, get back up and move forward. If you have time to complain about it, you should concentrate on doing better. Trying something new is never easy but in time it will get better.
I know if I were in your shoes I’d feel crazy and want to quit too but I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t think I was failing, I’d think I was betraying myself more than the team.

I’m thinking of joining the tennis team and a community service elective. So, I’m gonna get a taste of your misery but I can’t give up because I chose to do so. I don’t think you should quit just because it’s hard. Life isn’t easy and neither is swimming. Maturity is perserverance ya know? Hang in there will ya?

I see lots of things you dislike vs. like. Don’t think of it as quitting. Think of it as Stopping. You mentioned the drama activity. Start that. You are not quitting to do nothing. You are stopping one thing and starting another.

I’ve seen many people stop this sport and I’ve never held it against them. If people only did new things with the assurance they would like such things then nobody would do new things. You tried swimming and it is not for you.

If you have so much more cons than pros it definitely shows that its basically ruining your social/educational life. You should definitely quit and plus you sprained your ankle and your coach doesn’t believe you, also bad for your health. And you can just join another team

that is one long list and just quit the cons are bigger than the pros

I almost quit swimming once i went on a two month break it. I don’t think you should quit but if you are seriously thinking about it you may want to talk with your head coach about it like I did. Swimming is a very grueling sport and takes a lot of hard work, determination, and time but it can be very rewarding if you stick with it. If you are seriously concerned that your grades may slip you may need to talk to your teachers but in my experiences they are lenient in letting you adjust to a new schedule because sports take a lot of time you really need learn a lot of time management.
